Coming out of hibernation to ramble about a Halloween costume

… first off, yes, I still exist. It’s been a weird year full of ups and downs, including moving, work, visiting the house I grew up in, and hardest of all, losing Hannah to an autoimmune disorder early in July.

I didn’t even go to Gen Con this year. Between Hannah’s unexpected vet bills, exhaustion from a busy summer, and adopting two new cats a week and a half before the convention, staying home was for the best.

I missed getting the chance to dress up, though. After chatting with a work friend about Halloween and her inviting me and my partner to come hand out goodies at her house during trick-or-treat time, I started thinking about what costume I should wear this year.

And then it hit me. I could revisit an old favorite character of mine, and maybe do her justice this time.

Me at 15 years old, wearing a homemade Princess Peach costume consisting of a pink T-shirt, a handmade two-tone pink skirt, a construction paper crown, and a cheap curly blonde wig. I'm holding a Princess Peach cookie jar.
I… am not going to think about how old this picture is now. 😅

That’s right: I’m gonna dress up as Princess Peach again.

For long-time followers of the blog, you might remember that picture – it was my first foray into costume making, at the tender age of 15. I’ve made two different Princess Peach costumes over the years – the one in the picture above, and a second one while I was in college.

A photo of myself from 2007, dressed up as Princess Peach from the Super Mario video games, holding a small plush of Princess Peach.
I was so sick when this picture was taken…

This time, I’m not hand-making the costume – no, this year I managed to find an officially licensed Princess Peach costume!

I saw the costume on Amazon, saw it was on a pretty good sale, and snatched it up. I knew it probably wouldn’t look quite as nice as the stock images, and it might not fit right, but it would at least be a start for a decent Halloween costume.

It arrived in the mail today, and… I was pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Sure, right now it’s a wrinkly mess, but it fits me pretty well, aside from being super long. It needs a few things to make it perfect – like a petticoat to floof out the skirt more, a pair of red heels, and a tank top to wear underneath because the dress fabric is pretty sheer.

It’s something for me to get excited about, and a fun costuming project. And along the lines of my Sailor Moon costume from 2018, it’s another chance to wear a fancy version of a costume that my younger self did her best to make on her own.

This costume might be what finally gets me blogging here again, y’all. 🩷
